Gel-Eze – Taking the Pressure Off!

pads_thumb

In the past limited research had taken place to assess the forces applied, by the rider and the saddle,  to the horse’s back when ridden but in more recent times this issue has been highlighted by scientists and companies alike! Technology has advanced a great deal in the last twenty years, allowing the equestrian industry to develop some outstanding products and to study the equine sports horse in greater detail and research and development has always been high on the list of priorities for World Wide Tack.

World Wide Tack’s Stephen Biddlecombe was convinced that an innovative gel product had a place in the equestrian marketplace to help protect horses’ backs and offer shock absorption. The Gel-Eze brand began its development in 1999 and launched three years later after significant research. It is now exported to over 35 countries worldwide!

As the range developed by Stephen has been expanded to include products that include strategically-placed cushions of gel helping saddle fit and balance as well as shock absorbing and protecting the horse’s back. This include such as a wither pad, rear riser, non slip pad and anatomically shaped gel pads to name but a few!

In addition as a trade leader in sheepskin saddle pads, so it was only a matter of time before the two products – gel and sheepskin – were blended! Stephen says… “We have very successfully combined the Gel Eze products with our range of Stephens Saddle pads. The pads are very popular with owners of big moving horses that do a lot of extension at the shoulder, as the Gel-Eze also stops lateral movement of the saddle, and the resulting pressure points.”

Gel-Eze Saddle Pads; The Innovation!

In 1999, scant scientific research had taken place to assess the forces applied to a horse’s back when ridden, and the benefits of saddle pads were poorly understood; yet equestrian wholesaler Stephen Biddlecombe was convinced that an innovative gel product had a place in the equestrian marketplace to help protect horses’ backs and offer shock absorption. The Gel-Eze brand began its development that year, and launched three years later after significant research. It is now exported to over 35 countries worldwide by UK-based manufacturer World Wide Tack

Technology has advanced a great deal in the last twenty years, allowing the equestrian industry to develop some outstanding products and to study the equine sports horse in greater detail.

Stephen of World Wide Tack says…

“As our range of gel-based under saddle pads has developed, we have been able to add products that include strategically-placed cushions of gel, so the numnah or saddle pad itself is very slim and unobtrusive. For example, our Dressage Numnahwith Gel Eze anti-slip comfort cushions has small gel pads positioned in strategic places at the shoulder area, either side of the horse’s spine, and under the point of the saddle tree. These help protect the horse from the effects of saddle rotation, which is completely normal to a degree, and also the force applied as the rider sits down in the saddle; they are especially useful for horses whose riders do a lot of training in sitting trot,” Stephen says. “A unique selling point of ours has always been that we understand the biomechanics of horse riding, and respond with products that benefit the horse.”

Sheepskin is introduced…

World Wide Tack is also a trade leader in sheepskin saddle pads, so it was only a matter of time before the two products – gel and sheepskin – were incorporated. Stephen from World Wide Tack says… “We have very successfully combined the Gel Eze products with our range of Stephens saddle pads. A popular seller in Europe is theLambswool Saddle Pad with Gel Eze Comfort Cushions, which protects the shoulder area, the point of the saddle tree, and also either side of the horse’s spine. The pads are very popular with owners of big moving horses that do a lot of extension at the shoulder, as the Gel-Eze also stops lateral movement of the saddle, and the resulting pressure points.”

Gel Eze products are currently being manufactured in Italy, and undergo strict and vigorous quality controls prior to being packaged and boxed.

Choosing the Right Saddle Cloth for your Horse

A saddle pad or saddle cloth is an important piece of equestrian equipment which offers the horse extra cushioning from the saddle. Saddle cloths supply the horse with additional comfort by reducing friction, absorbing shock and sweat whilst preventing any rubs or chafes to the skin.

Some technologically advanced saddle pads such as the Gel-Eze range from World Wide Tack can contribute to evening out pressure on the horse’s back when ridden, whilst certain fabrics can assist in keeping the horse cool by improving the air flow through the pad to the back.

When choosing a saddle pad for your horse the two major considerations, alongside selecting the correct size, are the shape and fabric of the item.

The typical composition of a saddle pad includes layers of felt, foam, gel or other synthetic fabric with a tough outer cover of cotton, polyester or sheepskin. Whilst the shape of the saddle cloth required for the horse or pony depends on their own conformation and the type of saddle fit they are wearing during ridden work.

World Wide Tack offers a wide range of saddle cloths, numnahs and pads composed with either traditional and timeless sheepskin or modern innovative gel alongside top quality cotton which we believe to be the best saddle cloth materials on the market to be.

Sheepskin

Saddlecloths with a soft, furry underside are highly popular. Traditional wool used in the Stephen’s range at World Wide Tack is more cushioning than synthetic fleece and also more effective at reducing friction. Typically genuine sheepskin will be more expensive and require more careful maintenance than synthetic fleece but the increased level of quality supplied is well worth any extra pennies.

Gel

Gel saddle pads are made from a gelatin like substance that is a solid but has some characteristics of a liquid. The gel will disburse an impact and then regain its original shape. Gel is often used within the layers of a pad itself or a gel-only pad can be used alongside a regular saddle cloth. Gel pads can a dual purpose being both anti-slip and shock absorbing but can often be expensive.

Saddle pads can also be used if they are specifically designed to do so to assist in improving minor saddle fitting issues such as raising the saddle at the pommel or cantle. The Gel-Eze range from World Wide Tack incorporate gel into saddle pads and cloths, why not check out the range by clicking here today?

Remember…good saddles distribute pressure evenly across the horse’s back, and good saddle pads can help where saddles fail, but no saddle or pad can correct the basic problem of pressure applied where it shouldn’t be. The number one area which must be force free is the spine and there should be no pressure whatsoever in the sensitive wither zone–not even from a saddle pad.
